External recognition - ye gods - an exam

 Kia Ora

Final day of the course - and it has been awesome.  Plenty of ideas and resources to revisit and implement - I am looking forward to checking out what other people in my subject areas have put together.  Keep it Simple is pretty good advice I reckon.

There have been lots of lightbulb😲 moments for me throughout this course - its like - jeepers so thats what this is all about.  A little bit excited about continuing this learning journey - its kind of like a "hit refresh" - @ a stage of life / career where a fresh impetus has been needed.  Cool.

I have appreciated the value which has been indicated by Dorothy and the DFI team - towards teachers for being who they are.  As an older teacher playing the digital world catch up game  - sometimes I have felt of less value / irrelevant /disempowered - in the changing face  and emphasis of education.

That is always where the students help me out - their unconcious validation through their enthusiasm for whatever it is we are up to - bring a sense of worth.  So for me - there has been a big shift over the progress of the course - from defensive mode towards the system to an upskilling mode within the system. Cool as.

Yay!!  passed the exam.  Now I know how the kids feel.  Sort of sick in the stomach but so relieved to get through.  Now I can understand a little better how sometimes students are reluctant to even begin the process - let alone go through the process. I think I may have forgotten that feeling.  Its all come back now. Nothing like going through something yourself to develop some empathy.

Well thats me - once again - thank you so much to the whole DFI team.

Computational Thinking - here we go...

 Morena

Well - what a great course.  Just being on the course is beneficial within itself - let alone the content.  What have I learned - (about being an online teacher ) -  from being a online learner:

*When the camera is off - that means my students may have gone for a little wander for some reason - which is all good with me as long as they come back and turn camera on again.

*Students will "vote with their feet" online - just like in real life

*Know my stuff.  Stick to what I know - thats what the kids are looking for - incorporate different digital tools as I become more confident with them. Digital Fluency the first step.

*Gee I looked forward to the breaks.  I find looking @ a screen so intense. And I found I got hungry too - even though all I am doing is sitting down.  I can see why you need to keep it all in balance - get outside and get moving as well.

*And the sinking feeling in my stomach when there was talk of an exam - I can't believe it - I felt nervous.  It sure has done me good to be put in my students shoes.

Dorothy     EMPOWERED

Empowerment = choice.  Wow.  Agency vs Empowerment = the terms themselves.  You know - I have never made the connection - how some people would associate the word with functions of the state. Thats a fair point.

The ability to have CHOICE. Lets go there.

Taking back control of your own life - Rangatiratanga.    Digital Learning - more than just a tool.

Learn
Deep Dive - lots of incredible things happening in the digital space.  Exciting but scary stuff also.  Oh what a surprise(not) to hear of the bias re Amazon - screening out female candidates.  Some things just don't change.  Let me guess - designed by a .....man?  A little bit funny alongside a bit sad.   The moral dilemmas - yep - they sure do exist.  The disparity between the super wealthy of the world and the rest of us is just so obvious - when you look at all this AI innovation - is this innovation really going to be accessible to more than a few??Just think
of how many people in NZ  do not even have a home.

Kerry - a dive into the Hangarau Matahiko.  Digital Fluency for teachers - a natural progression through to the students.  Cyber smart / collaborate with others / agile characteristics = innovative designers = a digitally rich environment = teachers and students working alongside each other.

Computational Thinking /  Designing and Developing Digital Outcomes - just what they both mean. The two different areas of the digital curriculum.  Good to get some clarity.

Digital fluency comes first - get a handle on the jandal.  I like that a lot.

Transferability of Skills - taking a multidisciplinary approach.

TKI resource base of case studies - wow I didnt even know this existed.  Now thats a helpful resource.

Explore = coding.

The breakthrough.  Envirotech

Explore with Vicky : Tinkercad

Oh my goodness.  What a cool programme.  Even though I was very slow @ this and still didnt really succeed at getting the roof on straight - its a starting point.  And I can only imagine how much students would love using this and then printing out their designs.  Cool as.

Well there you go.

Sculpt GL looks cool as too. Another time.

Once again a massive thank you to the facilitators of this course with a big special shout out to Kerry for the in depth help in our bubble group.

Anyway.

Heres to life, heres to learning and heres to our young people

                         Whangaia ka tupu ka puawai

Devices - Lets Go

 Kia Ora

Learn

UBIQUITOUS = Anytime    Anywhere    Any pace    Anyone

Empowering the learner and the teacher.   AGENCY is the term I would use to describe this.  I loved listening to Dorothy speaking on this as I have found from personal experience - that empowering students and having a sense of teacher agency - has resulted in the most effective learning/teaching - with tangible results.

It has been awesome to move throughout this course towards a small feeling of excitement re incorporating digital skills and tools into the fluid outdoor/ enterprise / student business programme - as I have upskilled and gained confidence.  The students are great - they know what I am good at and are happy to help me out with the digital world.  We work together.

"Its just a tool"  - Guilty!!!!  That would be me - more than once.  Challenging point from Dorothy - and fair enough too.  I guess moving towards a position where I have more confidence with the digital realm - has been the necessary shift to make the pivot - "Its NOT just a tool."

ANYTIME       ANYWHERE     ANY PACE

Refer - Edith Paikanga Davis (Bay of Islands College) - digital world offers a level playing field - where EQUITY is key.

What are you proud of?

What do you regret?

What have you taken forward into the new era of schooling?

Being cybersmart. Kua tangata whenua ki te ao matihiko.   Looking at digital footprint = priority foci for each term - refer cybersmart annual overview.

Explore

Hapara.  Well - this really is the next step from g classroom.  I look forward to exploring and becoming familiar with this workspace provider.

Ding!!!!! The light just went on.  Its called Kerry showing us the Hapara workspace examples.....i just checked out under NZC - and there it was.....Sustainability!   ye Gods.  I don't have to reinvent the wheel.  Must have missed the memo.

Screencastify = cool!!!

A touch on ipads and chrome books.  Explain Everything worth looking into.

A good look @ Hapara workspace - how to set them up - and a bit of an explore.

Looking back @ Lockdown :

What are you proud of?   Proud of the students.  They showed up!!!  That was so cool - it was great

                                         to see them.

What do you regret?        I feel regret for the kids that their youth years are turning out so different

than my own youth years - we had more freedom.

What have you taken forward into the new era of schooling?   That digital learning really does

act as an instrument for equity.  My classes have all achieved at the same

level as pre lockdown days - thanks to online learning.

Getting going with Sites

 Morena

Learn:

Here we go..... setting up our own sites.  Yay.  Looking forward to this.

Connected - way of empowering our learners. Once again - the default is visible.  Harness the Digital = *Opportunities      *Support structures      *Time Savers

RSS = Real Simple Syndication

Secondary Connects   - 2022

Te Reo Maori 101 - 2022

Visible Teaching = Nature of assigned tasks / Role of teacher(highly effective teaching)/ Nature of sites accessed(rich multi modal opportunities)/ Student choice and collaboration(Agency)

LEARNING SHIFT: - towards accelerated learning

*Engagement *Teaching conversations  *Cognitive challenge  *Visibility   *Scaffolding

G site - 1 stop hub for learning. 3 clicks from homepage to current learning - no more.  Site essentials:

Dont delete old sites.

Create:

Example of Hospo site :

Hospo site example - Tamaki College

Great site example

(Patsy - Bay of Islands college)

Google sites - a step forward from google classroom.

DFI - g sites - great set of slides

Tautoro school - great eg

Share:

Well.  Now that all sounded pretty easy and looked easy watching our tutors create online.....then the realities of actually doing it....well thats another story.  Made a start at getting the Enterprise site up and running - and kaboom! now how can it be that hard to create a button?  The good thing is there are some slides with instructions.  Thank goodness for that.

Well - I am going to share the site as it exists.....and then I plan to improve the site a heck of a lot as I can.

Lets go - google sites

 Week 5

Morena

Me tangi, kāpā ko te mate i te marama

Thoughts and blessings to Cassandras whanau and friends.

Learn

Dorothy : Visible: We dont want any mystery - its either visible - or its not. (Hattie) If whanau have to scramble around to find the learning......thats not right. We dont want barriers. Cultural capital = use technology to make learning and teaching visible. Looking at what should be private- definites.  Default = visible. Google sites - a way to make learning visible. Visible teaching + sites. Hapara makes learning visible. Hapara was designed for Manaiakalani community.

https://filmfestival.manaiakalani.org/

Kerry : Multi Modal = An inclusive, differentiated approach to teaching in a digital learning environment . Lynchpin to delivering 21st C learning. Universal design for learning = Engagement/Creating and Expressing/Sharing. Class site which reaches all learners - caters to SDL.

Engagement Personalised Learning Accelerated achievement EMPOWERMENT

The goals leading to - lifelong learners.

Class site needs to be engaging. selling the love of learning. Similar to a shop front window - my site should reflect my class. Ideally class site first page = fresh = living virtual notice board. Change- on a regular basis. How to sustain their engagement.

Behaviour engagement = Multimodal design Cognitive engagement = Multitextural design

Site = a work in progress - a new site every year - keep it alive!!

https://sites.google.com/view/how-to-with-new-sites/home

Site is the portal = where all your work is. Hapara works in with this.

Explore

Well by crikey I have learned heaps today.  Jamboard, Google sites......by jingoes.

And then a look @ how to set up labels in this forum.

Well ....sad news for the day with the passing of colleagues in an accident....there is never the words ...

Me tangi, kāpā ko te mate i te marama
Thoughts and blessings to all those whanau and friends of those who have passed

Thank you again to Kerry and the team

Day 4: Dealing with Data

 Kia Ora Koutou

(Note to remember :  there is a Hapara online course available also - to upskill)

Manaiakalani Pedagogy :   SHARE

Sharing - an instinct in human nature.  Speed and amplification of how and how fast we can share is what has changed.

"Work with learners to establish an authentic audience for their learning outcomes."  A sense of audience - now  - we can go global.  People who CHOOSE to listen to you = an authentic audience.

Connected Learners Share = Positive   Thoughtful   Helpful

FINISH a task or learning - leads to developing work ready attitude.

refer J Hattie - the feedback feedforward model / analysis

Do not neglect this important plank of our floorboards = SHARE what the students do......We have to think differently about how to do this.  te_ara_poutama  a starting point(insta)

Learn :   Google Forms

This is a great tool.  And free!!  I like that.  Free is good.

Learn: Google Maps

This is a good tool too

Learn : Google Sheets - yay - this is a tool I need to use.  Being new to this.....Not quite sure if Id call that a deep dive or just a drown.....definitely something to come back to thats for sure.  Like everything - I am so looking forward to having some time to explore all these cool tools @ my own pace. The levelling up session helped - but still something to explore further to become more confident.

CREATE : Google Sheets

Now I am not a data person - I appreciate the bottom line.  Typical cut to the chase entrepreneur.

Wow!! Unbelievable.  I think I just did it.

SHARE :  What does it mean in our school and what does it mean for me?  More importantly - what have I heard from my students?

We need to share more of the positive stories - the photos and words which tell our students success stories.  Our school facebook page is more of a notice board than a showcase - which is all good - it would just be really valuable to see more photos and stories about the students.  Perhaps this is all a work in progress.
Blogs.....what do I really think...... Well - I think if that is how you want to express yourself - all good. If on the other hand you would rather create an artwork or a poem or plant a food forest   - then take photos and put it on some site that works for you - isn't that ok too?

Perhaps this is all the balance to the world of tik tok .  Just thinking out loud.

All up - as always - Learn   Create    Share    : Great tag which sums it all up.  Thanks again for your patience Kerry and Happy Birthday to you.

Day 3 : Digital Tools: CREATE

 Kia Ora all

Day 3 : Manaiakalani : Lets Go.......Multi media

Learn : Its all about the hook.   Creative skills help students become better problem solvers, communicators and collaborators.(Apple)

World full of playfully creative people.  Refer to Hornby High example.

CREATIVITY(Innovation) + AGENCY  + SUSTAINABILITY = my own pedagogy bottom line.

It is in creating that the individual gains purpose

A dive into YouTube.  Protocols need to be in place.

Kerry: Multimedia in your classroom - taking story telling to a whole new level

Its not about how much it costs.....its about what you do with it.

Sight , Sound and Motion        -      Inspiring!

Create    and     Share :

Makaore :  Google Drawing

My first Google Drawing.

Google Slides = A quick run down on slides.  Whew! busy !

And then....even more Create !!

Thats the link way.....lets work out how to embed HTML.....

Lets see if this works.....

Well....not yet.  But I'm getting there.

Yay! at least its there.  A great starting point.
